Robert “Drew” Fleming, a graduate mechanical engineering student, took second place in the student poster competition at the 76th Physical Electronics Conference held last week at the U of A.

Several University of Arkansas students received awards at the annual conference of the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers.

Danielle Neighbour, a senior in the civil engineering department and an Honors College student, has received the Daniel W. Mead Prize for Students from the American Society of Civil Engineers. This prize is awarded annually for a student paper on professional ethics.

A team of University of Arkansas chemical engineering and biology students received two awards at the Environmental Protection Agency’s People, Prosperity and the Planet, or P3, Competition during the National Sustainable Design Expo in Washington, D.C.

Two teams of industrial engineering students received awards at the General Donald R. Keith Memorial Capstone Conference, which takes place at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point.

Two University of Arkansas electrical engineering doctoral students received awards at the Ceramic Interconnect and Ceramic Microsystems Technologies conference. Atanu Dutta tied for second place and Sayan Seal won first place.

Matt Barlow, a doctoral student in the Department of Electrical Engineering, received a Best Session Presentation Award at the Applied Power Electronics Conference and Exposition.

Adrian Beirise, who is working on a master’s degree in biological engineering, won the Graduate Poster Competition at the annual Institute of Biological Engineering meeting in South Carolina.

Civil engineering and Honors College student Danielle Neighbour has been named a 2016 Truman Scholar among 54 selected nationwide.

U of A chemical engineering teams received a first place and two second-place finishes in the International Environmental Design Contest.

Civil engineering graduate student, Richard Deschenes, has recently been awarded the ACI BASF Construction Chemicals Student Fellowship for the 2015-16 academic year.

Arturo Nuñez Uribe, a junior in the industrial engineering program, has received the 2016-2017 Myrtle & Earl Walker Scholarship from the SME Education Foundation.

Eight University of Arkansas students – four undergraduates, three graduate students, and one recent graduate – have received National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships for the upcoming academic year. The highly competitive awards are made to students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics and recognizes academic excellence and the potential contribution that each student will make to his or her field and to society at large.

Payam Parsa, University of Arkansas doctoral student in industrial engineering, has been awarded the Electrification and Controls Manufacturers Association Honor Scholarship by the Material Handling Education Foundation Inc. The award will provide $2,500 for Parsa to use for the 2016-2017 academic year.

University of Arkansas teams swept all three places Tuesday in the graduate division at the 2016 Donald W. Reynolds Governor’s Cup Collegiate Business Plan Competition.

Two University of Arkansas students, Wilson Guillory and Karla Morrissey, were recently awarded selective Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships. These scholarships are the most prestigious undergraduate award for science and engineering students who intend to pursue careers in those fields.

Seven students from the College of Engineering were selected to represent the University of Arkansas at the 2016 Clinton Global Initiative University meeting held at University of California Berkeley April 1-3.

University of Arkansas civil engineering students placed second in the National G-I/SEI Wall Competition hosted by the Geo-Institute and Structural Engineering Institute of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

Honors civil engineering student, Ryan DuChanois, has been selected as one of 35 U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars  He will be pursuing his master’s degree in engineering for sustainable development at Cambridge University.

Senior industrial engineering student, Keegan Henderson, placed second at the Institute for Industrial Engineers South Central Regional Conference in Kansas, February 25-27. His paper discussed the use of mathematical modeling techniques to assist baseball general managers with investing in the baseball free agent market during offseason.

Honors College engineering student, Danielle Neighbour, a civil engineering major and spanish minor, has been chosen as a finalist for the 2016 Harry S. Truman Scholarship. This is the 5th year that multiple U of A students have been named finalists.

February

A University of Arkansas entrepreneurship team focused on transforming bladder cancer therapy won grand prize at the Brown-Forman Cardinal Challenge at the University of Louisville. The team included Sean Smith, a doctoral student of biomedical engineering, and two students from the Sam M. Walton College of Business.

Joseph Daniels, a doctoral student in civil engineering, is studying heated pavement systems for airfields. The idea is to incorporate wiring into concrete, then transfer heat through the wires to warm the pavement.

January

University of Arkansas engineering students received the Beaver Water District Scholarships on January 21. The scholarships, which aims to support students who will study water, went to Andrew Stephens, a biological engineering major, and Shelby Sidney, a civil engineering major. Beaver Water District processes high-quality drinking water for re-sale in Northwest Arkansas.

Marci Early, a junior civil engineering student, presented her original research at the annual meeting of the Transportation Research Board in Washington D.C., in January, after completing a 10-week internship program at the Texas A&M Transportation Institute.

December

Curran Henson, a biomedical engineering student, and Radwan Al Faouri, a research assistant professor, attended the Winthrop Rockefeller Nanotechnology for Healthcare Conference on December 2. They presented on graphene research which focuses on determining the adhesive force between graphene and E. coli.

November

Lionel Davis, as a summer intern at GE, designed the “Commutator Brush Clamp Release Tool”  which won an internship-wide competition, a field of 42 engineering students.

Nathan Burford, a doctoral student in the microelectronics-photonics program, was recognized by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Antennas and Propagation Society for his research on terahertz radiation. He also recently received a doctoral research fellowship from the IEEE.

October

Graduate student alumnae received top honors from the American Society for Engineering Management conference. Rufaidah AlMaian won the 2015 Best Dissertation Award, and Jingjing Tong was named first runner up in the same category.

Zizhao Liu, a chemical engineering graduate student, was a finalist for EMD Millipore’s 2015 Life Science Award Program for his cutting edge research in the field of bioseparations.

September

Britney Washington, junior chemical engineering student, received a study abroad scholarship sponsored by Dr. Pepper from SECU.

Six biomedical engineering students attended the Coulter College Workshop competition. The Students – Alex Khang, Kristina Maxwell, Samantha Stubbs, Seth Washispack, Syd Wiggins, and Mason Young – got to attend the workshop that teaches commercialization and equips students with the skills to turn medical devices into products. The Arkansas students competed against students from other universities in a contest that tested their problem-solving skills. The team placed in the top three.

July

Morgan Roddy, a doctoral student in microelectronics-photonics, was awarded the Arkansas Space Grant Consortium Fellowship. Rodd with receive $12,500 towards his research and the opportunity to visit the NASA Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. Roddy’s research details the in-space micropropulsion for small spacecraft.
